Introduction to Server

A Server is a system or a computer that provides data to other computers. It serves data to systems on a Wide Area Network (WAN) or a Local Area Network (LAN) over the Internet.

Different types of servers exists, including:

  • Web Servers (WS) : A WS may run Apache HTTP Server or Microsoft IIS, which both provides access to websites over the Internet.
  • File servers (FS) : A FS might use Samba or the Operating system’s built-in file sharing services to share files over a network.
  • Mail Servers (MS) : A MS may run a program like iMail or an Exim, which provides SMTP services for sending and receiving email.
  • Print Servers (PS) : A PS is a computer system that manages one or more printers simultaneously.
  • Database Servers (DS) : A DS is a computer system that processes and manages one or more database queries like MySQL.

Advantages of using Servers are as follows:

  • Servers generally have higher storage capacity as multiple disks can be inserted into them. All these disks can be configured to provide protection against any failure. In case of failure, RAID technology stores the same data in multiple disks and can reconstruct individual disks upon failure.
  • The data Storing/Fetching rate is higher that’s why hard-disks can spin faster in some servers.
  • It is not necessary for each server to have a Monitor, Keyboard, and Mouse. Multiple servers can share these components.
  • A Server is built to provide support for multiple user applications and multiple user access simultaneously.
  • Servers are simpler to upgrade in terms of disk space, remote access, and access speeds that’s why it is Scalable.
  • Server plays a vital role in case of Security. Rules defining security and access rights can be defined at the time of set-up of server.
  • Servers provides proper management and organization of file at one central location.
